What is Afro Nation?

If you're reading this, chances are that you have an idea of what Afro Nation is, and you are perhaps considering attending. But just in case, Afro Nation is THE Afrobeats and Amapiano music festival hosted in select cities annually. Beyond just a festival, Afro Nation is a celebration of music from the entire African diaspora and is one of a number of events helping to bring African music to new fans all over the world.

That the event is able to attract the biggest global stars is a testament to the increasing influence of Africa’s vibrant music industry and also the goal of Afro Nation's founders, Smade and Obi Asika, namely, to bring together the best African artists in Afrobeats, Hip Hop, RnB, Dancehall, Amapiano, Afro House, and more.

The inaugural event and location was in Portugal back in 2019, followed by a rendition in Ghana that same year, and another edition in Portugal in 2022. Since then the festival has grown and expanded to include Puerto Rico (2022), Ghana (2019, 2022), Miami (2023), and Detroit (2023).

Recently announced, Afro Nation is heading ‘home’ to Lagos, Nigeria in 2023 as well. Specifics to follow once available. In the meantime, you can sign up for priority access here.

Controversy

Having been founded just before the world shut down due to the pandemic, the festival was riddled with some cancelations. The Puerto Rico edition was also troubled by some unfortunate tropical rain and wind as well as some of the headliners not appearing. In addition, some artist replacements were not a huge hit. This was obviously met with quite a bit of disappointment as patrons had traveled and invested to see some of the more popular headliners like Burna Boy.

The 2022 Ghana edition also faced cancelations however this time due to safety concerns which caused the whole festival to shut down early causing some of the favorite artists expected to close the event, unable to perform.

Why you should still go

It's easy to focus on the instances where the performers didn't show up, however, bear in mind that in most cases the artists not only show up, but show out! If you're looking for an atmosphere unique to the African diaspora while enjoying the latest and greatest from Africa’s vibrant music scene, this is the place to be.

Much like other festivals, friendships, and connections form as you enjoy spending anywhere from 2-4 days together with like-minded individuals. Don't get me wrong, these festivals are packed with upwards of 40,000 people, however, if you're someone who enjoys connecting with other people, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Boat, beach, and after parties

Other reasons to attend include all the side events and parties happening around the festival but not specific “Afro Nation events”. With so many people gathered in one city, you know promoters are going to get their piece of the pie as well by putting on all sorts of events. Look out for day parties, boat parties, and after-parties to keep you entertained. Don't make the mistake of thinking that the fun ends after the concert. In fact, it's only the beginning. Here's a tip though, there's bound to be a lot of parties being promoted so you might want to do your due diligence a bit in advance so you're not so overwhelmed. But then again, acting in the spur of the moment and just letting the night take you wherever it leads you, can also be a vibe and equally as fun.

At the time and publication of this article, Afro Nation Portugal (2023) and Detroit are yet to take place. So the following is what you need to know for these two upcoming events.

Afron Nation Portugal (2023)

Here’s a short recap of the 2022 installment to give you an idea of what to expect:

This year’s Portugal edition is taking place at Praia da Rocha, which is the main beach of Portimão located about 2 miles from the city. Portimão is the largest city in the western Algarve and is a hub for tourism, leisure, and retail. Taking place June 28-30, the following artists are scheduled to perform:

With this event taking place mere days from now, most tickets have been sold out, however, you can still purchase tickets here.

The Portugal edition is not only the original location, but also one that has repeatedly been a success hence why the festival keeps coming back.

About Portimão

Portimão is probably best known for the fantastic beach of Praia da Rocha. Located about 2 miles (3km) south of the town, this is one of the most impressive stretches of sand on the Algarve coast.

Praia da Rocha is a modern, purpose-built town packed with hotels and bars. Obviously known for its beautiful beach, it has become one of the most popular destinations in the Algarve. Behind the beach however is a boulevard with shops, bars, clubs, and a casino.

Due to proximity, you can stay either in Portimão or Praia da Rocha when attending Afro Nation depending on the vibe you're looking for. Portimão is going to give you a bit more of a traditional and local vibe with restaurants, cafes, and shops largely aimed at local clientele. Meanwhile, Praia da Rocha is more modern and aimed at tourists.

Afro Nation Detroit (2023)

After a successful Miami edition this same year, Afro Nation is coming back to America and hosting the event in Detroit. This will be the first time the festival is held in Detroit and is quite a different scene from the other renditions by not being particularly known for its beaches. That said, Detroit is not a stranger to the music scene and carries a lot of history in that regard. And with that said, here’s the lineup you can expect for Detroit:

Unlike other locations, the Detroit rendition, taking place August 19 & 20, will have side events specifically associated with the festival and include talks & panels, a block party, The Laughing Leopard comedy show, and a Motown special. These side events do require separate tickets which you can get more details about and purchase here. Main event tickets, including VIP, are also still available. Get your tickets here.

About Detroit

Detroit is a city brimming with heart, soul, and an undying spirit. Known as the Motor City, Detroit's rich history and vibrant cultural heritage makes it a captivating destination for tourists. Take the opportunity to see the beautiful skyline dominated by architectural buildings like the Renaissance Center and the Guardian Building. And of course, immerse yourself in the city's musical roots with visits to the Motown Museum and the birthplace of techno music. You can also explore the vibrant Eastern Market which is a haven for foodies and art enthusiasts alike, where vendors offer a diverse range of produce and local artisans display their craft.

Despite the challenges, Detroit has proven its resilience and continues to reinvent itself, offering visitors a unique and unforgettable experience, now including the Afro Nation festival.

Final Tips & Conclusion

Afro Nation is certainly an experience like no other regardless of which city or country you decide to attend. The experience will, of course, be unique to the location you chose, however, the main event is still going to be the main event and the artist lineup is always one to impress.

For additional tips and information definitely stay connected by following these various Instagram pages: Afro Nation, Afro Nation US, and Afro Nation Africa.

Another great tool to not only get information but also to connect with others attending Afro Nation is this WhatsApp group chat. Heads up, this chat is not affiliated with the official Afro Nation and it can also be rather overwhelming with quite a bit of activity that isn’t always specific to the festival. That said, there is a lot of information shared, especially as the days to the event draw closer, and if you ask a question you’re likely to get an answer.

In conclusion, if the Afrobeats and Amapiano music scene are up your alley, this festival is a must. Barring any cancelations, you’re in for quite the experience and you won’t regret attending.
