The Favorite Verzuz Battles that Reminded Us of the Magic of Music
We got that Friday feeling over here and ain't not Friday vibez complete without the Friday tunes to match the mood. There's a slew of tunes to with the mood, but Johnny Kemp's "Just Got Paid" REALLY expresses that Friday feeling we got going. There's just something about good music that becomes the soundtrack to our lives.
Think about it? A certain song starts playing, and you remember exactly where you were at a particular time when that song played. Or it reminds you of a certain someone, a certain summer, you name it. Issa soundtrack, lol. The global pandemic hit pretty much every industry hard, but the music industry, particularly live events, were definitely impacted.
Thanks to the genius idea of producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, Verzuz gave us a different form of live events to look forward to. And boy have these clashes been epic! Next Saturday, May 8th is sure to be another great installment of nostalgic hits and vibes as SWV and Xscape battle it out. We use the word "battle" loosely as these events have proven to be more of a celebratory "great recognize great" music tributes instead.
So in the spirit of good vibes and good music, we're giving you our favorite Verzuz battles thus far.
T-Pain vs. Lil John
The JOKES on this one?! Y'all we laughed so hard and vibed equally as hard. And part of the fun was watching these two, not only banter back and forth, but have as much fun as we did. Definitely a reminder that music is fun.
Babyface vs. Teddy Riley
The clash that was so epic it happened twice, lol. This was one of the initial most anticipated ones, and internet woes just wouldn’t let Teddy Riley be great. Or perhaps it was his “music video production” set up that was just team #TooMuch. Either way, the hits are undeniable, the greatness undisputable, and a reminder that music will outlast tech issues, and rise to every occasion.
Kirk Franklin vs. Fred Hammond
Whew! In a time when we NEEDED to go to church for some healing and restorative vibes, these two did not disappoint and over delivered! I mean we got an intro from Bishop Jakes, and cameos by Marvin Sapp AND Tamela Mann. Kirk did a cute lil two-step with his wife, and for one evening, we “forgot” about the crummy and racist world that took George Floyd’s life. A reminder that music sure is healing.
Beenie Man vs. Bounty Killer
Yet again, the JOKES!! Oh, man! From the get-go with the Jamaican national anthem to the police threatening to shut everything down, to dancing with the babies at the end. This clash was just everything. Honorary mention and shoutout to Digicel Internet in Jamaica which held up better than Verizon, lol. The fact that two artists, known to have had feuds in the past, came together showing such love, is a reminder that music can bury any hatchet and bring out the friend in just about anyone.
Patti LaBelle vs. Gladys Knight
These two ladies proved that age ain't nothing but a number! Cause they STILL got it. Didn’t matter if you were young or old, everybody enjoyed this one. And how couldn’t you with such classic hits and encouraging vibes, reminding us just how timeless music is.
And with that, cheers to the weekend and to great music! ♥
'Til tomorrow,
Grace & Peace!
