How To Overcome Hecklers In Life & On Stage

Last night was the Last Comic standing finale, and congratulations to Clayton English for taking home the grand prise. One of last years mentors was the very talented and funny Wanda Sykes. Sykes is also the executive producer of the show.

Telling jokes, to average person, seems like an easy task. However if the show has showed us anything, it's that there's an art to writing good comedy. Not only do you need to have skill in composing your set, you have to have real thick skin to deal with hecklers.

Hecklers, aka haters, are a part of life period, however for most of us, it's not so blatantly obvious and right in front of our face. It's funny to me how everyone can be an 'expert' and critique all day long while sitting on the sideline.

The same goes for your personal critics who judge your aspirations based on their own fears or disposition of negative thinking. It's up to you whether you want to subscribe to their way of thinking or not.

If a comedian ever gave in to a heckler, it's over! It's vital for a comedian to out-smart and out-wit a heckler to keep the remaining audience appreciate and respect their craft. I want you to do the same. Whenever someone has something negative to say about you pursuing your dream, let it fuel you to go harder. Your hustle will eventually gain respect, and especially when your labour starts to bear fruit, aka dollar bills.

Wanda Sykes went to school and graduated with a Bachelor in Marketing, and had what many would consider a great job with the NSA. Try to imagine walking away from such a job to pursue a career writing jokes. Sykes however has managed to not only become an Emmy winning writer for The Chris Rock Show in 1999, she's also transcended into acting and the author of "Yeah, I said it" in September 2004.

If she can do it, so can you beautiful.

Be blessed!
