Jennifer Hudson is about to make her broadway debut, starring as Shug Avery in the revival of the musical "The Color Purple." Although the show doesn't officially open until December, the first preview of the show was this past Tuesday (November 10), and was received with all smiles as Jennifer took her bow Just Jared reports.

Of her new role, Jennifer had this to say:

"I have butterflies taking on this role, but I like that. I never second guessed it – I just hopped right in. She is such a different funky character for me and I was very attached to book and the film."

The Colour Purple is Alice Walker's novel, published in 1982, about Celie, a rape and abuse survivor growing up in the deep South, which won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for fiction. In 1985 Steven Spielberg made the Drama under the same title, starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, and Oprah as the strong-willed Sofia. The movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards. The original Broadway musical debuted in 2005, produced by Quincy Jones, Oprah Winfrey and others. This revival of the Broadway show will star Hudson, Danielle Brooks, and Cynthia Erivo.

Talk about an extraordinary journey Jennifer Hudson has had from finishing seventh in the third season of American Idol, to winning multiple awards for her portrayal as Effie White in "Dreamgirls" including an winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Not afraid to step out on faith, Hudson put herself out there, and what some might classify as a "failure", not even finishing in the top 3 of American Idol, she's had more success than many of those who went on to win that show. Had Jennifer won, her life would arguably have taken a different direction, putting the music at the forefront and possibly not allowing the time and commitment to do Dreamgirls. Who knows? I'm just speculating here, but what I know for certain is that all things work together for our good, regardless of how it may appear to the naked eye.
