Staying True To Who You Are Will Give Rise To Your Opportunity
Morning everyone! So I first just want to start off by saying that the Emmys last night where actually good. As I mentioned yesterday, I definitely did channel hop between football and the show, but hearing Viola Davis speech was certainly touching. She's an awesome speaker by the way. I'm sure you've seen most of it around social media, but I had to add a picture I came across stating that opportunity is the only thing separates women of colour from anyone else.
The opportunity to showcase your talent, (I was going to add to prove your worth, but you never have to do that). You are worthy, period! Whether someone else believes it or not is irrelevant, as long as you know it. However to be given the opportunity to show the world what you already know to be true is something that hasn't always been possible as a black female. What this blog aims to show you though, is the many women who've already paved the way for you, whether it's in dance, music, acting, writing, or fashion, YOU can successfully make it.
For music Monday today I want to talk about Tamia who's currently on tour promoting her new album "Love Life", which lands in LA this Thursday at Club Nokia at 8PM. This a Canadian woman who saw an opportunity and ran with it. For 20 years she's not only been in the business, but she's stayed true to who she is, refusing to conform to whatever "sound" that is currently popular.
In an interview she gave with the radio show The Breakfast Club a while back, (attached below) Tamia stated the importance of staying true to who you are, and never change who you are to please somebody else. The only person you have to please is you. I don't mean this in conceited way, caring and doing for others will actually do more for you than you can imagine. However as it pertains to pursuing your dreams, be true to the dream.
Tamia closes the interview by stating that she chooses to be happy regardless of the trials, ups and downs that come with everyones life. And I want to encourage you to do the same. You might currently be stuck behind a desk and want nothing more than to be on a stage. However be encouraged and happy knowing that you're planning your "escape". Cause that's what I want you to do. Plan it, then execute it. Stay happy beautiful.
Be blessed!
